Camilla George

Fri 6 Mar

Camilla George is a visionary saxophonist, composer, bandleader and innovator. Deeply connected to her Nigerian roots and known for fusing African and Western music, she has developed a distinctive sound that places her firmly within the new wave of London jazz, alongside artists like Nubya Garcia and Shabaka Hutchings.

Her music is a hypnotic blend of Afrofuturism, hip hop and jazz, often reflecting themes of African history, culture and the legacy of slavery. Her third album Ibio Ibio is a tribute to her tribe, the Ibibio people of southeastern Nigeria, and features an impressive line-up including Daniel Casimir, Sarah Tandy, Renato Paris, Sheila Maurice-Grey and Daru Jones.

Born in Eket, Nigeria, George began playing saxophone at age 11. She studied at Trinity College of Music, where she was taught by jazz legends like Jean Toussaint and received the Archer Scholarship for Outstanding Performance. After performing with Jazz Jamaica and artists like Ernest Ranglin, she launched her solo career in 2014. Her debut album Isang and follow-up The People Could Fly received widespread acclaim, with support from outlets like Jazzwise, the Financial Times and Tidal. George has performed at major festivals including Love Supreme, EFG London Jazz Festival, and SXSW, and has supported artists such as Courtney Pine and Dee Dee Bridgewater.
